Masjid Kampung Hulu, Melaka
The OLDEST functioning mosque in Malaysia — built in 1728! Masjid Kampung Hulu shows almost no Middle Eastern influence: instead it has a tiered pyramid roof like a Chinese pagoda, Javanese timber craftsmanship, and a pagoda-shaped minaret. A living monument to how Islam took root in the Malay Archipelago through trade, and still an active neighbourhood mosque nearly three centuries on.
